DUO to Block Access to Countries or Regions Subject to U.S. Economic Sanctions

Starting May 5, 2022, DUO plans to block access to its service when it is accessed from countries or regions subject to U.S. economic sanctions, and to some countries, such as Sudan, that are no longer subject to sanctions.  These are the countries/regions where DUO will be restricting access, effective May 5th:

  • Cuba
  • North Korea
  • Iran
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Ukraine – regions including
    • Crimea region
    • Donetsk region
    • Luhansk region
    • Sevastopol region

Once DUO blocks service, users in these regions will see a DUO error message: “Access denied. DUO Security does not provide services in your current location.”

With DUO now required for access to Blackboard and Patriot Web (and any other University service that requires DUO authentication), individuals who travel to these countries/regions will not be able to use these services after May 5th.

If you are a student or faculty member who may be affected by DUO’s new blocking policy, please be aware of this issue if you intend to travel home for summer break and take appropriate actions before departing.  For students, if you are registered for Fall 2022 classes, you will not be able make changes to your classes via Patriot Web until you return to campus.

We have reached out to the Registrar’s office and the Office of International Programs and Services to let them know of this development so that they can assist affected students.
