The following information and resources will support our faculty, researchers, and staff who would like to pursue international collaborations, to ensure they are conducted in a secure and compliant manner. Collaborations in or with Sanctioned Countries and Regions

If you are considering any work with colleagues and organizations located in or affiliated with comprehensively sanctioned countries or regions, carefully review our Sanctioned Countries and Regions page for more information, and contact [email protected] before proceeding.

Conducting Restricted Party Screening

The U.S. government and other organizations and entities maintain various restricted party lists, which are publicly available, and updated on a regular basis. When collaborating internationally we must check against these lists to ensure there are no restrictions. Scholars and Affiliates

Mason’s Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) works with Schools that wish to invite foreign scholars to visit. Please visit the OIPS site for information and forms on both J-1 Visitors and permanent faculty appointments. 

International Travel

If your collaboration involves international travel, please see our International Travel page for more guidance.

Fieldwork & Research

University research activity done outside the United States may not qualify for the Fundamental Research Exclusion and may be subject to export controls until the work is published or otherwise made publicly available. Before disclosing or sharing information and data resulting from international fieldwork reach out to [email protected] so that we can provide appropriate guidance.

Presentations

When presenting data or information in an international setting (including in the United States where the audience may include foreign nationals), ensure that you limit your presentation to only information or data that is published, or is publicly available, or that qualifies as Fundamental Research. Be careful not to include or discuss any proprietary, unpublishable, or export-controlled data or information as that may constitute an unauthorized export.

International Conferences, Meetings and Events

If you are considering attending a conference or meeting in a comprehensively sanctioned countries or region, carefully review our Sanctioned Countries and Regions page for more infIf you are attending or presenting at an international conference, meeting or event we will need to screen the sponsor(s), the host(s) and any individuals you will meet with outside the planned agenda or program, as well as their organizations. International Visitors

Can I collaborate with a colleague if they are on a U.S. Government restricted party list?

Contact us at [email protected] if you screen a colleague and they or their institution appears on one of these restricted party lists. We will review the listing against the restrictions the U.S. Government has placed on the individual or their institution and the type of collaboration. Can I collaborate or continue to collaborate with a colleague from a sanctioned country once they leave Mason and return to their home country?
