Office of Research Integrity and Assurance

Export and Sanctions Compliance

Overview and our services

Our team works with Mason faculty, researchers, students, and staff to ensure that their activities comply with U.S. export and sanctions regulations and laws. We support the Mason community by providing outreach, guidance, and training on the regulatory requirements, assisting researchers who are working on export-controlled projects or traveling internationally with Mason laptops and equipment, and applying for export authorizations from the U.S. Government. See the links below for resources to assist you in your work.

See University Policy 1141: Export Controls and Sanctions Compliance for our policy statement, key definitions and responsibilities. For a comprehensive overview of our requirements and procedures see our Export Compliance Manual.

Contact us: If you have questions regarding export and sanctions regulations or whether they apply to your proposed activities, or if you suspect an export violation, please contact [email protected].

Our Management Commitment

It is the policy of George Mason University to comply will all laws and regulations related to export controls and economic sanctions compliance. Every faculty member, student, and employee shares responsibility for ensuring that George Mason University complies with U.S. export control and sanctions regulations. Please see our management commitment statement signed by our President here for more information.

Why this matters

George Mason is committed to compliance with export and sanctions regulations, as the consequences for noncompliance are very serious for the University, researchers, staff and others involved. This is a complicated and evolving area of the law that is hard to navigate with violations resulting in large fines, penalties and denial of export privileges (ex. up to $1M per violation, suspension/debarment or loss of federal funding, imprisonment for individuals involved).
