The following information will help ensure that your international travel is in compliance with various export control and sanctions regulations and Mason policies.
Prior to any international travel, review the information outlined on this page and contact [email protected] with any questions.
Where are you going?
Travel to most countries does not require authorization or a license from the U.S. government. An exception is travel to sanctioned countries or regions. See our Sanctioned Countries and Regions page for more information on restrictions and requirements for travel to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, or the Crimea, Donetsk (DNR), and Luhansk (LNR) regions of Ukraine.
Travel to certain countries requires an application and approval from the University Travel Advisory Committee (UTAC). See the International Travel Website for more information or contact [email protected].
In addition, if traveling to a Foreign Country of Concern (FCOC) which are currently defined by the U.S. Government as China, Iran, North Korea and Russia, please contact the Research Security team at [email protected] or see the Research Security and International Collaborations site.
With whom will you interact?
If you are traveling internationally for Mason business or for professional outside activities, we must conduct screening to ensure you are not interacting with any sanctioned, prohibited, or blocked individuals or entities. See our Restricted Party Screening page for more details on who must be screened, and for the names of screeners in your college.
What will you be doing?
Presenting or sharing data. If presenting or sharing data or information in an international setting (including in the United States where the audience may include foreign nationals), ensure that you limit your presentation to only information or data that is published, or is publicly available, or that qualifies as Fundamental Research. Be careful not to include or discuss any work in progress, proprietary, unpublishable, or export-controlled data or information as that may constitute an unauthorized export.
While the results and information resulting from Fundamental Research are not subject to export controls and can be shared without a license, it is important to remember that any items, technology, or software generated under that Fundamental Research would be subject to export controls and may require an export license to ship or hand carry outside the U.S.
Research or fieldwork. Any university research activity done outside the United States may not qualify for the Fundamental Research Exclusion and may be subject to export controls until the work is published or otherwise made publicly available.
If you have any questions regarding your planned activities, please reach out to [email protected].
